The purpose of this video is to answer the questions: Are we natural? Or are we special, different from, and better than nature? Throughout time we have evolved side by side with our fellow inhabitants of Earth, but we are separate in many ways. We are not ‘better’ than nature we are cohabiters with nature. Our relationship with nature is not black and white it is an interwoven tapestry that closely knits us with nature, together, but separate. There are many things we share with nature and varying degrees in which we share them. But there are also aspects of nature we cannot attain and there are aspects of ourselves that are out of reach of nature. Humans are special.
Rationale.
Our video opens with a set of skits showing some of the ways that we are special, how we are different from nature. Our first skit shows an example of human ‘manners,’ it shows that we as humans use silverware, and cook our food by controlling fire. Animals do practice ‘manners’ in the sense that the alpha members or leaders of a group will eat first, but this is not nearly to the degree that humans take their table manners. The next skit is an example of human’s sense of humor a trait that is lacking in the natural world. The third skit shows man’s fear of death and that we as humans are built in the image of God. Nature does act in ways to evade death but they are actions based on instinct and only to hold it off until they can pass on their genetic code. For example, when some tree species are attacked by insects or are dying due to a disease they stop producing leaves and allocate all their energy to producing seeds thus spreading their genetic legacy. The fourth skit is an example of how humans practice deceit, it is true that some species feign injury to misinform their predators but this too is on more of an instinct level and not the same as how humans implement this tool. The final short skit is demonstrating how humans think rationally. No natural organism can match the human mind’s ability to think logically. We chose to use this short skit format to quickly show some of the ways that humans are different from nature in a way that is entertaining, educating, and thought provoking.
Next in our video is a longer skit showing the downfalls of speciesism. We are different. Not better. As humans we cannot say our species deserves more because we can talk or because we have thumbs. This is the ‘trap of speciesism.’ If I say that I am better than a monkey because I can read how is that different from racism or sexism that I am better due to the color of my skin or my gender. Evolution is not a ladder, it is a tree branching in many directions. Natural selection decides which direction each branch heads toward. Natural selection is not forward looking, meaning it has no end, no goal. There is no end to evolution, change is inevitable. This section of the video was meant to show the irrational mind of a prejudice. We chose to show nature taking back its rights from the ignorant man with physical force to make the message sink in.
The final portion of our video is a narrative summarizing our views on human’s relationship with nature. The section begins by showing the traces of evolution through time to show that all organisms share an evolutionary birth. The narrative then explains how humans’ more advanced brain, attained by evolution, set us apart from nature. The narrative goes through many examples that we feel set us apart from nature, and how it is because of our complex mind that these things are possible. The narrative then goes on to explain that through evolution every species is made special and unique. At this point in the video we felt it was appropriate to show the varying differences in nature that has all shared the same evolutionary birth. The narrative ends with our specialness due to a complex brain. This is the summary and conclusion of our video meant to cause thought and reflection.
Compare/Contrast:
1. The book advocates that polite eating habits such as using utensils and having table manners sets us apart from our natural inhabitants. This is a point we directly make in our first skit of the video. The video depicts a man at dinner about to enjoy his meal. The table is set and the man chooses to use a fork and knife to cut the food into manageable pieces where as the dogs beside him wolf down their food without so much as a thought for decorum.
2. The book also writes about speciesism, a form of prejudice where one species is set above another and allowed more rights because of its traits or lack of traits. This is also a point made directly in the video. Speciesism is just as wrong as racism, sexism, or any other prejudicial –ism. No trait or lack of trait grants the right to with hold the rights of anyone or anything.
3. The book mentions that humans are special because of our ability to ‘weather any storm’ by saying that ‘only humans can survive all of Earth’s environmental conditions. This was not a point made in the movie because it has too many holes in it. Yes, humans can survive in all conditions as a whole, but individuals die in environmental conditions all the time. In most disasters not 100% of anything will die, there are fighters and survivors in all species.
4. The book also suggests that only we as humans possess a soul. However, proving the existence of a soul in either humans or animals is impossible. One can present support for the existence of a soul by using certain examples but real proof is unattainable. Since it is impossible to prove a soul exists in a human it is equally impossible to prove a soul does not exist in nature.
5. As stated by the book we are also special because we plan for our future. This is discussed near the end of our video and is depicted by an election campaign poster and a squirrel gathering nuts. Nature does plan for the future, squirrels prepare for the winter, dogs shed hair in the summer months, and some animals have the same sexual partner their entire lives. But these ‘plans’ are not even breaking the surface; humans plan to a much farther extent planning every last detail. The extent of humans planning ranges from planning an evening to investing money for ones grandchildren. Our in-depth knowledge of time and use of our knowledge to plan our future sets us apart from nature.

The video follows the book's description of why humans are special. First it discounts the myths commonly used to differentiate humans from other species such as using utensils, deceit, fearing death, having a sense of humor, etc. These examples are merely forms of speciesism and I liked how they portrayed them as stupid rationalizations that don't really set humans apart in each little skit. They then went on to the more serious segment on how we do possess similarities with many animal habits but because of our cognitive abilities, we use them differently and are therefore set apart from other species. This video made me think that maybe humans aren't as special as we think because of the fine lines drawn in why we are unique.
ReplyDeleteThis video was very well done. It corresponds with the book's description of why humans are special. The way the disproved the commonly used myths was very humorous and well done. It got across the point about speciesism. The second half of the video was a more serious and informative about all species and are similar skills and abilities. They make the argument that we all possess the same skills but they are on different levels, which makes humans special.
ReplyDeleteI liked that this video opened with humerous skits and progressed into a more serious section that discussed how we are both similar to and different from other animals. Although other animals exhibit some of the same abilities as humans, they cannot perform these tasks on a level even comparable to that of humans. I also liked how this group denounced speciesm and made the viewer think more deeply about the differences betwen us and other animals. In addition, it was also good to point out that the brain size and complexity of humans is basically what separates us. The only part I disliked was when the stuffed bear was stabbed. If this had been a real animal, it would have defended itself.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the movie. It got the point across while still remaining humorous. I feel that it had more people that were actually being filmed rather than just being a voice over which I thought gave the video more character. They also did a nice job of portraying what the readings in the book went over.
ReplyDeleteI really liked it. First of all, very nice acting in the early part of the film. Good examples, relevant to the lives of the viewers (e.g. pizza vs. beer). Good acting. Good cinematography, you clearly got along with innovation space a lot better than we did. One question your video raised in my mind: you argue that humans are special because we do all these things that animals do to a greater extent. Could other species learn? Does something keep them from learning? Is there an invisible barrier between us and other species? Just wondering, your video made me think! One other thing: in one of the skits you imply that one thing that sets us apart from nature is that people are made in the image of God. I feel as though that question might be a subject for a separate, full length documentary. Oh, and also, I think a real bear would have protested to being stabbed whether it thought it was made in the image of God or not.
ReplyDeleteI liked how the movie grabs the viewer instantly in the beginning with the humorous skits, then it goes on to becoming more serious, yet still interesting. The simplicity at the beginning and the complexity at the end flow together nicely. I really enjoyed the skit because it is a build up of the idea that humans are better than nature and animals, but then the last part the human is shut down by the tree branch, therefore concluding that we may not actually have all the power. I think this video was really well done and deserves to be one that is showed in lectures.
ReplyDeleteThe video had a nice exchange from the light beginning and then a sterner look when they got more in depth look into the real information. It was an interesting view of information with a comparison between pets and humans, and then oddly a teddy bear and humans. This turned me off to the realism of the topic – it became radical and unrealistic. But it definitely showed the egoism of the human race.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the video. It was intelligently designed, funny and educational at the same time. The opening skits showed ways in which we are different from animals in a funny sort of way. It was followed by a serious narrative that showed us why we may be considered special. It was definitely one of the best videos I have seen from this class. Good Job!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this video and how you started out humorous but then dove right into the facts…very clever and a great way to get you audience hooked from the beginning. You used both video camera media and voice over video/pictures very well in addition to your video at the end, and the video as a whole had a nice flow to it and was easy to follow. I can tell you put lots of time and effort into this, and it is definitely deserving of being shown in class.
ReplyDelete3. This movie is fantastic. It embraces the situation with laughter in the beginning and clear images of comparison. It then turns into something with a more educational feel to it. I felt like it would be something you would watch in your science class. The pictures were great choices and flowed very smoothly. I enjoyed it so much I asked my roommate who is not in the class to watch it. Great job team 18!
ReplyDeleteThis was a good video and i enjoyed the humor in the beginning the most. I agree that humans are special and are much different than an average animal, but we are still animals. We are just Animals that have become a little more advanced then other animals but we still have some basic functions.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this video! The way you guys went from a humurous setting, and then really showing all of the pictures, and bringing in all of the criteria that the books talks about, bring a lot of respect when watching this video. One thing though that made it seem a little TOO unrealistic is the teddy bear. It was funny, but also degraded your topic a little in my opinion. Looks like you put alot of effort into it. GREAT JOB!
ReplyDeleteThis video was put together very well. I really enjoyed it. From the skits that showed how animals are inferior to humans in many ways, to how humans have evolved to become the superior beings on earth. Starting out humorous and jumping right into the factual things made the video very catchy and informational. Great Job group 18!
